He’s also the son of the god Zeus and mortal Semele. Hera, wife of Zeus, tricked Semele into seeing Zeus in his true form because Zeus had betrayed her. Semele died due to seeing Zeus’ true form so he took the unborn Dionysus and sewed him into his thigh until he was born on Mount Nysa. His birthplace is one part of his name; the other part meaning “of Zeus”. Dionysus is described as an old bearded man with a wreath of ivy leaves. His powers include changing his form into a lion or bear, making grape vines grow, and making people insane. He discovered the art of wine making and introduced it to the humans which intoxicated them. Once, a group of men he had intoxicated thought that he poisoned them so they captured him on a boat. They didn’t think he was a god even though other crew members believed he was because his bonds would not hold him. Later, he transformed into a lion after grape vines had crawled up the ship and wine flooded it. His wife was Ariadne, whom is a Cretan goddess. His other names that he goes by are Bacchus and Lyaeus. His symbol is a Thyrsos or pine cone-headed staff. His homeland is Mt. Olympus with most other gods. His sacred animals and plants include a panther, a lion, a bull, a serpent, grapevines, ivy, and pinecones. After Hera had banished her son Hephaestus from Olympus, Hephaestus made a chair with invisible bonds and captured her. Dionysus intoxicated him and brought him to Olympus where he forced him to let Hera free. Due to being the son of a god and a mortal, he was born as a demigod, but when he helped free Hera, she persuaded the other gods into him being regarded as a god which granted him immortality.
